Following the announcement of player retention by all 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) teams, the stage is set for an exciting 2025 auction. In total, 46 players have been retained, giving fans a clearer picture of each franchise’s strategy.
It is to be noted that the BCCI and the IPL governing committee collectively announced the guidelines for the retention window, extending each team’s purse value to INR 120 Crores, which was INR 20 Crores rise from the previous season of the tournament.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) were the only teams to exhaust their maximum retention limit, securing six players each.
Punjab Kings (PBKS), however, chose a different approach, retaining the fewest players—two uncapped talents—thereby entering the auction with the largest remaining purse among all teams. This strategic move positions PBKS favorably, allowing them to potentially make substantial bids in the upcoming auction and reshape their squad.
Rajasthan Royals, on the other hand, have retained a strong lineup, including five capped players, but this decision has left them with a least budget of Rs. 41 crore. With this smaller purse, RR may have to approach the auction with a more calculated strategy to complete their squad.
In terms of Right to Match (RTM) cards, each team’s retention choices will influence their flexibility in the auction. The exact RTM card allocation per team, however, will be determined based on the rules set by the IPL Governing Council, considering each team’s remaining budget and squad requirements.
IPL 2025 mega auction remaining purse value, RTM and available slots for all 10 teams
This retention phase sets an intriguing stage for the IPL auction, as teams with larger budgets like PBKS and those with more conservative funds like RR will bring varied approaches to their bidding strategies. Fans can look forward to an unpredictable auction landscape, with potential surprises in how teams deploy their remaining resources.
