The SA20 tournament, South Africa’s premier T20 league organized by Cricket South Africa (CSA), has emerged as a major fixture in global cricket. Established in 2022, the league has completed two successful editions, both won by the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, showcasing their dominance in the competition.
The tournament features six city-based franchises all owned by IPL team stakeholders just like in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Players are acquired through an auction system, similar to the IPL, making SA20 the second league worldwide to adopt this format. Each squad comprises 17 players, including international stars, South African internationals, and uncapped domestic players.

The SA20 2025 season, which will be the third installment of this tournament will begin from 9th January 2025. Surisers Easterncape, the two time champions will take on MI Cape Town in the opening encounter of the game, in their home ground at ST. George’s Park at Gqeberha.

Heinrich Klaasen has been a standout performer, leading the charts as the tournament’s top run-scorer with 810 runs. Klaasen also holds the record for most sixes (54), underlining his attacking batting style. Kyle Verreynne’s unbeaten 116 against MI Cape Town in February 2024 is the highest individual score.
On the bowling front, Ottniel Baartman leads with 30 wickets, while Colin Ackermann boasts the best strike rate (6.00). Rilee Rossouw achieved the best economy rate of 3.00, highlighting his efficiency in containing runs.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s Dominance in SA20
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape have set the benchmark, winning the inaugural and second editions. The team’s strong performances have made them the most successful side in the league. Among other records, Durban’s Super Giants posted the highest total (254/4), while Pretoria Capitals registered the lowest score (52).
The tournament’s commissioner, Graeme Smith, has played a pivotal role in its success. Under his leadership, SA20 introduced a lucrative prize pool, with R32.5 million awarded to the champion and R16.25 million to the runner-up in the 2024 season.
