The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has recently appointed the Test team coach Jason Gillespie as the new white-ball coach, making him a temporary full-time coach for the upcoming series limited overs against Australia and Zimbabwe. Gillespie’s interim role comes after Gary Kirsten submitted his resignation amid mounting disagreements with the PCB.
As per the sources, a new full-time limited overs head coach for Pakistan is expected to be announced in the upcoming weeks.
In a statement on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, the PCB confirmed the departure of India’s 2011 ODI World Cup winning coach Gary Kirsten. The board stated, “The Pakistan Cricket Board today announced Jason Gillespie will coach the Pakistan men’s cricket team on next month’s white-ball tour of Australia after Gary Kirsten submitted his resignation, which was accepted.”
Veteran Coach Gary Kirsten resigns within 6 Months of two-year contract
Kirsten’s resignation comes within just six months into his two-year contract as Pakistan’s white-ball coach, following a disappointing knockout in the group stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. Notably, Pakistan’s early exit had raised multiple questions within the PCB about his tenure.
As per the reports, Kirsten had multiple disagreements with the PCB, particularly concerning the selection of the squad for the upcoming series.
As per the sources, the board did not take his recommendations into consideration, which ultimately prompted his decision to step down from the role.
The source within the PCB also indicates a similar friction in Pakistan’s team management.
The source revealed, “PCB used the same approach when its new selection committee denied and ignored Test coach Jason Gillespie and captain Shan Masood from having a say in team selection. And while the selection committee’s attitude did not sit well with Jason Gillespie, he was adamant about continuing his duties. Gary Kirsten, on the other hand, has taken a different route and announced his resignation.”
The Pakistan cricket board will once again look to rebuild their management and find a permanent head coach for their limited overs squad.
