Chennai Super Kings’ latest recruit, Shreyas Gopal, delivered a standout performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) on Tuesday, taking a hat-trick for Karnataka in their clash against Baroda in Indore. 

Defending a target of 170, Shreyas helped turned the tide of the game in Karnataka’s favor with his devastating spell. He first dismissed opener Shashwat Rawat, setting the stage for a memorable hat-trick by sending the Pandya brothers, Krunal and Hardik, back to the pavilion in consecutive deliveries. He didn’t stop there, claiming a fourth scalp as Bhanu Pania fell prey to his guile, caught by Mayank Agarwal.

Despite Shreyas Gopal’s heroics, Karnataka lost the game to Baroda as the latter chased the 170 runs target within 18.5 overs, courtesy to Shashwat Rawat and Bhanu Pania’s remarkable knocks of 63 and 42 runs off 37 and 24 balls respectively.

Karnataka leg-spinner dismisses Pandya brothers in a stellar spell against Baroda

The 31-year-old’s impressive form comes on the heels of being acquired by CSK at his base price of ₹30 lakhs during the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. Shreyas has been in stellar form this domestic season, helping Karnataka secure their first victory in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy last month. In the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he has already amassed 10 wickets, reaffirming his value as a dependable all-rounder.

After spending the previous season with Kerala, Shreyas returned to represent his home state of Karnataka this year. Reflecting on his return, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to don Karnataka colors again.

“I know that not many players have been called back to their home teams, so I consider myself fortunate. It’s crucial for me to make the most of this chance. I’m here to bowl and bat at my best”, Shreyas shared with Sportstar during Karnataka’s Ranji opener. 

With his current form and ability to deliver under pressure, Shreyas Gopal is setting high expectations for the IPL 2025 season. CSK fans will undoubtedly be excited to see him weave his magic in the iconic yellow jersey.
